Stretch-Fit Underlay & Carpet Laying
(Particularly suitable for residential carpet laying)

1. Using the conventional approach to fitting stretch carpets (with the gripper properly secured) lay the Eco-Comfort Underlay onto the sub-floor with the exposed rubber side facing down.

2. Make sure that all the Eco-Comfort joins are closely butted and then taped on the backing material. Use a 50mm packaging tape along the full length of each join to ensure that these joins do not separate during the stretch-fit process. Alternatively, the closely butted joins can be stuck directly to the subfloor along the length using a general purpose adhesive.

3. Make sure that all Eco-Comfort joins run in the opposite direction to the planned carpet joins.

4. Never trim the carpet directly on the Eco-Comfort.

5. Joining the carpet using heat-bond tape can be done directly on the Eco-Comfort underlay, provided that a layer of tissue paper is placed between the heat-bond tape and the backing. This ensures that the heat-bond tape does not bond itself onto the underlay.

Double-Stick Underlay & Carpet Laying
(Particularly suitable for commercial carpet laying)

TUFTED CARPETS

1. The sub-floor must be smooth and dry. Moisture readings not exceeding 3.5% are acceptable. If the sub-floor is excessively dusty or flaky, it may be necessary to use an approved primer.

2. Roll out the Eco-Comfort (rubber side down) and trim edges, leaving a gap between the underlay and the skirting to allow for a neat "tuck" finish. The size of this gap should be roughly equivalent to the thickness of the carpet to be installed.

3. Underlay joins should be closely butted together to ensure that there are no gaps in the underlay. It is best not to tape the joins as this may cause problems. Make sure that the Eco-Comfort joins run in the opposite direction to the planned carpet joins.

4. Fold back the Eco-Comfort to expose the sub-floor for adhesive application.

5. Using Eco-Comfort approved adhesive spread the adhesive on the floor using a 1.5mm notched trowel to achieve a spread of approximately 3m² per litre.

6. Once the adhesive has been applied to the floor, a short tack-up time may be allowed for the adhesive to develop "grab" before laying the underlay. Note: Open time is influenced by the atmospheric conditions of temperature, humidity and air flow.

7. Lay the rolled-back Eco-Comfort carefully onto the wet adhesive. Using a 25 to 35kg roller press the Eco-Comfort onto the wet adhesive to ensure a good transfer of adhesive from the floor to the Eco-Comfort.

8. Follow the same procedure as above for sticking the carpet to the Eco-Comfort underlay.

Single-Stick Underlay & Carpet Laying
(Particularly suitable for commercial carpet laying)

TUFTED CARPETS

1. Roll out the Eco-Comfort (rubber side down) and trim edges leaving a gap between the underlay and the skirting to allow for a neat "tuck" finish. The size of this gap should be roughly equivalent to the thickness of the carpet to be installed.

2. All underlay joins should be closely butted together to ensure that there are no gaps in the underlay. Make sure that the Eco-Comfort joins run in the opposite direction to the planned carpet joins.

3. Tape the Eco-Comfort joins securely along the full length of each join with 50mm packaging tape.

4. Lay the carpet on the new Eco-Comfort sub-floor in order to size and trim the carpet.

5. Fold back the carpet. Using a 2.5 to 3.2mm notched trowel, spread the Pinnacle approved permanent bond adhesive onto the exposed Eco-Comfort backing, making sure that a small amount of adhesive falls over the edge of the Eco-Comfort into the tuck-finish gap. An adhesive spread rate of approximately 3m² per litre should be achieved. It is recommended that the corners of the notched trowel be filed and rounded to avoid damaging the underlay during the application of adhesive.

6. Once the adhesive has been applied to the Eco-Comfort underlay, a short tack-up time may be allowed for the adhesive to develop "grab" before laying the carpet. Note: Open time is influenced by the atmospheric conditions of temperature, humidity and air flow.

7. Lay the carpet onto the tacked up adhesive and roll thoroughly with a 25 to 35kg roller (do not use a heavier roller). Apply even pressure to the carpet to ensure a smooth, well-bonded finish. Perfect seams are achieved by butting-in one edge of the carpet against the other tightly. This leaves a small bulge at the seams which is rolled out at right angles to the seam.

8. A perfect finish is achieved by tucking the carpet into the gap left between the Eco-Comfort and the skirting. The small amount of adhesive that has fallen into the gap will add strength to the tuck-finish around the edges of the installation.

9. Re-roll one hour after laying.

10. We recommend keeping any traffic off the carpet for a minimum of 24 hours after installation.

WOVEN CARPETS

The installation method is the same as that for tufted carpets, except for the following:

1. Latex or glue must be applied to the trimmed edges of the carpet joins before they are butted tightly together. Alternatively, these joins can also be secured by the use of heat-bond tape.

2. We recommend that smoothedge gripper is used along the width of the carpet to avoid shrinkage should the carpet ever become wet.

NEEDLEPUNCH CARPETS

The installation method is the same as that for tufted carpets, except for the following:

1. All joins should be heat-bonded. There is no gap required between the Eco-Comfort and the skirting because the needlepunch carpet should not have a tuck-finish. The needlepunch carpet should be trimmed tightly against the skirting for a perfect finish.

2. The notched trowel for applying the permanent bond adhesive between the Eco-Comfort and the carpet must be a 3mm notched trowel. Adhesive should be applied at a rate of approximately 2 to 3m² per litre.

NATURAL FIBRE CARPETS

Eco-Comfort can be used successfully in the installation of a natural fibre woven carpet to enhance comfort and stabilise performance. The installation method is the same as that for tufted carpets, except for the following:

1. A 3mm notched trowel should be used to apply the permanent adhesive between the Eco-Comfort and the carpet at a spread rate of approximately 3m² per litre.

2. Permanent bond adhesive must be allowed to spill over into the tuck-finish gap between the Eco-Comfort and the skirting in order to prevent the woven fibres from blooming and unravelling along the tuck-finish edges of the installation.

3. Smoothedge gripper around the edges of the installation can be used in conjunction with the double-stick method. This will prevent shrinkage if the carpet becomes wet. This decision is at the discretion of the professional installer, who is familiar with the type and weave of the natural fibre to be used.
