Eco-Comfort® Technical Information

Pinnacle Eco-Comfort® Underlay is made from recycled and processed crumbed rubber. It uses a sophisticated bonding process which, in simple terms, can be described as surface modification. This process creates "hooks" which interconnect, chemically bonding the rubber granules tightly and permanently together.

Foamed and "waffle rubber" underlays are manufactured with a latex or polyurethane binder with up to 70% clay or limestone fillers. Air is then pumped through this compound to form thin-walled, air-filled bubbles. These thin walls break down quite quickly, especially in high use areas. Once these bonds are broken, the thickness and effectiveness of the underlay is reduced.

This means:

  • Increased carpet wear
  • Less underfoot cushioning
  • The production of allergy-causing dust particles, which are an unhealthy breeding ground for insects and asthma spores.

(Many of these cheap, imported underlays are banned in the UK and EU for safety reasons.)

100% crumbed rubber underlay provides cushioning by compressing rubber, not air. This is why it springs back when the load is removed. It's environmentally friendly and very, very durable!

Underfloor heating and Pinnacle Eco-comfort rubber underlay

Our underlay is fully compatible with underfloor heating. Any concerns that underfloor heating temperatures could result in the production of harmful VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) are completely misguided. Factory testing the underlay at temperatures well over 100 degrees Celsius produced no harmful VOC discharges. Typically underfloor heating temperatures reach a maximum of 28 degrees Celsius – our rubber underlay is totally safe when used with underfloor heating.

Concerns that our crumbed-rubber underlay produces unsafe levels of VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) can be safely put to rest. The reality is that VOC’s are generally produced by foam products. Our rubber underlay has been put through exhaustive factory testing and no concentrations of VOC’s are produced during the manufacturing process.

Typically asthma suffers are very sensitive to VOC’s. Our Eco-comfort rubber underlay has already been installed in the homes of a number of asthma suffers with no reported negative side effects.
